It’s not Scar City but Scarcity Records – an ambitious label coming from Bucharest. They’re aiming to promote an eclectic sound that’s missing in the breaks scene nowadays while keeping an eye on quality.

Mesmer set up the label in 2009 and since then Scarcity had a string of releases featuring artists from Eastern Europe and local talent. Some of their artwork is signed by Caine Verde aka Negru the same guy who’s responsible for our covers.

So far their releases harnessed a lot of positive reviews and support from renowned artists like Gella, Johan Sound Of Habib, Manuel Neztic, B-Phreak  and Kickflip, to mention a few. There’s something for every raver out there from breakbeat to tech house and from dubstep to breakstep and drumabdbass.

Their homepage also hosts a free download section with some nice tracks inside, step into the Scarcity sound!

Bobby for his friends, LMK on stage and our featured artist this month. He stirred our curiosity to further find out more about him after he delivered an interesting HD-02-MIX and a fresh EP to our catalogue.

LMK started to make music around 2006 under the guidance of his older brother who’s a renowned 4/4 producer with many international releases. They even released tunes and remixes together – on the prog house/goa trance tip –  in 2008 on labels like Elektrax,  4 Stroke, Guilhotina or Gardenia.  After experimenting with different tempos and styles, from house to drumandbass LMK managed to gradually define his trademark sound which is a grimey cross between dubstep and techno.

In 2009 HD Music released Blaze A Lot an EP co-produced with old time friend Pake. One year later HD Music is proud to introduce you his first 3 track EP called “Tapes”. What you get is a complete taster of what’s under his sleeve: deep basslines, grimey atmos and bouncy beats that sit somewhere between techno, garage and dubstep. Looks like heavy industrialized cities have a special vibe going on, you can almost feel it.

Who are you / what do you do / where do you live?

Sandu Alexandru aka LMKey born on 17 March ’88. I currently live in Romania – Galati to be more precise.

When did you start to produce music and why?

I started to get to know the urban underground movement around 2005 and in time I developed my own sound signature in which I believe and hope it will pay back some time in my life.

Which are your musical roots?

It all started from hip hop tapes, got through cds with drumandbass and jungle and now got to my own stuff.

What music/artists/labels are you following/playing?

Prime Audio, TEMPA, Rottun recordings, EX7, Transistor Recordings… I wouldn’t name any artists, it’s hard to sum it up…

What setup do you have? (hardware/software) Which is your favorite plug-in/instrument and why?

If you’re asking me about software FL Studio and Cubase are essential to what I do; combined with VSTs like Surge, Discovery, Albino and Vanguard. A studio mixer, a nice synth and a better sound card would definitely be useful at any time as hardware.

What’s better for you: producing or djing?

Both of them, although I prefer producing to some extent.

How could you describe your music?

Music you can listen on your couch or with your friends while smoking some joints :)

Where do you get inspiration for writing music?

Playing with sounds, fx and drum patterns. Sometimes the nature inspires me, the industrial area in Galati or local parties. I believe the most important thing is to learn to accept and understand every sound.

Who are the badboy producers from Galati?

Me and Pake, naturally :)

What should we expect from you in 2010 in terms of music?

Something new for sure and a new musical direction. Dunno what to say, I hope it will work.

FEATURED ARTIST: Radio Space Pop

Radio Space Pop is just a simple man who lives a simple life in a small Romanian city. The only thing that’s out of this world (apparently) is his music. His radio space pop emits an ever-expanding universe of frequencies that resonates on profound levels with any sensible listener. Words are too poor to describe the surreal and vividly coloured world created by his stellar soundscapes.

Although he is producing music since the 90s his first release saw the light of day by the end of 2008 as the first album released by HD Music. “Park” is a conceptual work that sketches a sonic picture of the imaginary Terra 2 and an its human colony inspired by a cold winter’s months that confined him in the studio. Its analogue sounds, rich and glowing atmos, gentle percussions, mechanical glitches, repetitive minimal patterns and a bit of interstellar hum will allow you to visualize it.

The prequel to “Park” comes in the form of his second LP which is about to drop this month on HD Music. “Melodic Airwaves” is a selection of his early works and counts 12 tracks produced between 1997 and 2001. It’s amazing how fresh some tracks still sound and also a living proof of the timelessness of good music. We’ll be back with more info about it in due time.

In the meantime we asked him some questions to find out more, check it out:

Who are you /what do you do /where do you live?

My name is Nonel Motataianu. I’m living in a block of flats in a small city called Deva where I’m currently enjoying my last months of unemployment aid.

When did you start to produce music and why?

I got a Yamaha DX-11 FM synthesizer around ’91 and started experimenting with it. By then I had to record all of it on tapes as the synth didn’t have a sequencer and there was no computer technology available. I did simple sound synthesis with 8 bit algorithms, minimal-ambient textures having been influenced by the music of Brian Eno and Edgar Froese. In 1996 I had been working as an orchestra instrumentalist in the local theatre orchestra which gave me the opportunity to find out and learn to use a complete synthesizer – with extended polyphony, complex oscillators and a 16 channel sequencer. I worked with a Korg X3 and then with a Yamaha W7 which were bought by the theatre from Germany and which I could borrow from time to time. It was  and still is impossible to afford a 2000 DM (the old German currency – n.a.) with a normal wage. These two synthesizers allowed me to produce my first proper tracks which were featured on three short documentary films aired on Pro TV in ’97 and ’98.

The reason I started working with sound may be the need I felt to materialize and transpose the feelings and sensations that haunted me ever since I was a kid. It was a thing I primarily did for myself and I was cool with that. Occasionally I shared the music with my friends through tapes. As one of my beer buddies once said, I was producing chill out music for friends.

Which are the most influential artists for you?

I can count many but mainly I’d name Klaus Schultze, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jarre and later Aphex Twin. Besides these I slowly discovered the new generation of electronic music producers.

How could you describe your sound?

Hard to say… I think that generally my sound is somewhat organic, more or less melancholic and mainly suggests a visualisation of a biomechanic symbiosis. It’s sci-fi rooted and in the end it’s just a fantasy that many people have it.

What inspired you to produce “Park”? Was it a long process?

There wasn’t anything particular about “Park”. I guess I just did a personal sound description of a fantasy I had at some point and which I felt the need to materialize in a long play. In the end it’s just a robotic story that takes place in an artificial extraterrestrial environment. I recorded it in a couple of months in the winter of 2007 but I started working on it since autumn.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on two different projects. It’s something different of what I did so far. I don’t have any idea how they will turn out in the end, it’s just some older ideas I didn’t manage to finalize.

What do you think about the electronic music scene in Romania?

I can definitely say it evolved enormously in the last decade, which is a normal thing. I can only be happy there are a lot of things happening on all levels and there’s a lot of diversity.

Which are the romanian artists that mean something to you and why?

There are many artists I like and I’m not speaking only the electronic music producers. I can’t give a specific name unfortunately perhaps maybe because there are a lot that mean something to me and I was fortunate enough to meet them.

What would you recommend us to check in Deva / around?

I guess the main attraction point in Deva is the old fortress, or whatever is left of it. As for venues, I’d recommend Fischer’s Pub, Ceapa Rosie and John’s Pub. Although it’s a relatively small city there’s quite a generous offer of pubs and shops.

Vampires : truth or fiction?

We all know they’re real, innit?

Tudor Popa aka Readymate released his first EP – Monday Swing for High Definition in 2008 introducing his blend of nu jazz licks, broken beats and juicy tropical flavours with lots of percussive elements. He’s been experimenting with different sounds for years and already produced a dozen drumandbass tunes, minimal techno and lately broken beats. Developing a taste for melodies and sexy grooves in his signature sound got us instantly hooked so we signed him.

Readymate – Clash Clap (Original mix) by HD Music

Anticipating his forthcoming single due on the 20th of February, here’s a little scoop into Readymate’s world. We wanted to find out more on his endeavours and future plans. We’re more than proud to have him on board and be sure you’ll hear more of his broken beat hip swinging tunes this year!

Who are you / what do you do / where do you live?

I’m Tudor Marius Popa and besides music I’m an executive manager at a private company. I live in Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Romania.

When did you start to produce music and why?

I started to make music more seriously in 2004 after 2 years of doing it just for fun at home or private parties with close friends. Back in 2003 I met a lot of people from the local electronic music and club scene – producers like Mihai Popoviciu or the well known psy-trance producer ATMA. In his studio I produced and mastered for the first time a progressive trance tune. I think the reason I started producing music was because I was fascinated by the technology and also by the way of life of a DJ, you know.

Which are your musical roots? Which are your role models?

My roots in music are strangely in hard techno and house music. Besides that I would also count the lovely and very often listened to classic funk, reggae and dub. Artists like Carl Cox, Westbam, Goldie, Chemical Bros and many hip hop, afro beat and funk artists; De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Quantic, Lack Of Afro and many more.

What music/artists/labels are you following/playing?

Now I’m playing all that sounds funky and fresh. Names are too many… and labels I can mention a few like G.A.M.M., Raw Fusion, Super Hi Fi, Tru Thoughts, Plastic City and Hospital.

What setup do you have? Which is your favorite plug-in/instrument and why?

I use my VST’s for all what you hear and the Behringer BCD 3000 as a midi controller when I play at parties.

What’s better for you: producing or djing?

For now it’s djing but I expect more from producing in 2010.

How could you describe your music?

In one word: groovy.

Where do you get inspiration for writing music?

Every day it’s a new pattern.

Are there any other producers you know of in Romania that make the same kind of music as you are?

I don’t know if there is anyone producing the same kind but I think close are Deevision and Electric Brother.

If anyone asked, what would you say about the music scene Sibiu?

It was kinda great in the last year and continues to grow.

What should we expect from you in 2010 in terms of music?

Some lovely collabs with many artists. It’s a old plan that started to take shape in 2009 but the results will hopefully come this summer.

And since it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend we thought to remind you that…

Nobody who’s into music can ignore SoundCloud nowadays. For anyone not familiar with it yet, here you can get real time sound updates from artists/labels and spot talented people that may not have stepped out of their bedroom studios. One of these freezing days we came across Cristina Tasnic’s aka Muntelevenus page. There was an instant buzz going on our chat after hearing her latest uploaded sketches ‘Cheesecake Time’ and ‘Attic Scene’. Naturally, we asked her some questions to find out more about this mysterious Muntelevenus moniker. Check the tunes and you’ll know why!

Muntelevenu5 – Cheesecake Time by Cristina Tasnic

Muntelevenu5 – Attic Scene by Cristina Tasnic

Who are you / where do you live?

I’m just a girl. I was born in Chisinau, but currently live in Amsterdam.

When did you start to produce music and why?

When – this summer. Why – because I always wanted to.

What is your artist name standing for?

Perhaps Mound of Venus could shed some light, otherwise it’s just the female pubic bone in Romanian :)

How could you describe your music?

Still in the process of developing my own style, so can’t really say.

What setup do you have? (hardware/software) Which is your favorite plug-in/instrument and why?

Reason, Live, Ozone and a NI interface. That’s about it for now.

Which would be your greatest accomplishment as a musician?

Add something new to the music, develop new genre, inspire people and make them happy. That’s cuz you said “would”. I haven’t achieved any of that yet.

What’s better for you: producing or djing?

Producing. Although both bring unique kind of satisfaction.

From where do you get music to your mp3 player/computer/decks?

I only get music if I really need it, otherwise it’s Spotify. I also like radio shows like Zona Libera “cu Matze si Vasile” :-) , Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 1… oh and SoundCloud and MySpace to see what are my favorite producers up to.

Where do you think dubstep is going this year?

Just like in any genre hitting the mainstream there’s going to be more tunes sounding the same, but there’s also great potential for innovation. Fusion with already existing genres is always interesting.

What music/artists/labels do you think sounds fresh right now?

I’m pretty impressed with DJ Bootsie’s Holidays in the Shade, which came out just recently. Awesome stuff. Also Two Fingers, Kode9, Rustie, PANTyRAID. Labels – uhm, I usually keep my eye out for the artists, not labels… but I like nearly everyone on Hyperdub.

Do you believe in 2012?

No, but I’d still like to squeeze in as much as I can before then :-)
